Living in New York City as a Californian: My Journey, Favorite Spots, and Tips (Part I)

As a California girl who traded palm trees for skyscrapers, let me tell you about my NYC adventure so far. The Big Apple? Fast-paced, vibrant, and so friggin’ fascinating. It is the perfect place to romanticize your life, as every new corner feels distinct and braised for possibility! Cue Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten”.

Embracing the NYC Food Scene

Let's talk food—NYC knows how to feed you right. Below are a few experiences that come to mind, which I found note-worthy! This is by no means an exhaustive list, but more of a recollection of recent outings. Bear in mind, I’m still *new* and discovering neighborhoods. If your favorite spots aren’t on this list, I’m sorry! Ping me with any recommendations.

  • COTE - When you’re feeling fancy (or you just got paid), COTE is where you go for a feast fit for a queen. Hint: order the feast!
  • Fossetta - You haven’t lived until you've experienced the *focaccia from Fossetta*. Say that five times fast. While every variation of focaccia is like a child to me, and I know I should not pick a favorite, I will—it’s the ricotta and hot honey. And the lasagna? Fughetaboutit! Worth every penne.
  • Emmy Squared Pizza - I know I’m coming in hot with a Detroit-style pizza as my NYC pizza recommendation, I just love a thick slice. Not sure that will win me any favors, but for what it’s worth—it is made in New York. If you’re looking for something a slice more native, Bleecker Street, Joe’s, and Lombari’s will keep ya drooling. You really can’t go wrong.

Favorite Bars and Nightlife

Now, onto the nightlife, because in NYC, the fun never sleeps (but I do):

  • Overstory - For those sky-high vibes, Overstory is where you want to be. It’s a rooftop bar with killer views of the city. The cocktails are as stunning as the skyline—perfect for impressing visitors or a fancy date night.
  • If you’re a wine connoisseur, Stafili Wine Café is a dream. This cozy spot in the West Village offers a fantastic selection of wines from around the world. The atmosphere is relaxed and intimate, making it perfect for a chill evening with friends or a low-key date night. There is an alternative location in Tribeca, complete with a private room. The ambiance is quite memorable.
  • Blue Note Jazz Club - An iconic spot in Greenwich Village, Blue Note is a must-visit for any jazz lover. The intimate setting makes every performance feel personal, and the talent is top-notch. Grab a cocktail, settle in, and let the music whisk you away on a journey to another place in time.
  • Comedy Cellar - This legendary comedy club in Greenwich Village is the place to go for laughs. You never know who might drop in—big names in comedy often perform here unannounced *ahem Chapelle and Seinfield*. Get ready to laugh until your sides ache.

Activities and Adventures

NYC’s playground is massive, and there’s always something cool to do:

  • Central Park - Green oasis in a concrete jungle. Perfect for morning jogs, lazy picnics, or just chilling with a good book and some sunshine. Also a huge fan of the farmer’s market in Union Square and the magic of shopping in Bryant Park. I love all the little trinkets!
  • Broadway Shows - Catching a show on Broadway is a must. “The Book of Mormon” & “Aladdin” blew my mind, but there's always something awesome playing. Peep some off-Broadway shows if you’re feelin’ like you want to be a trendsetter.
  • Museums - The Met, MoMA, Guggenheim—like candy stores for art lovers. Hours disappear as you get lost in their world-class exhibits.
  • Brooklyn Bridge - Walk it at sunset for views that'll make you gasp. Iconic skyline, Instagram-worthy moments—need I say more?

Tips and Tricks for Moving to NYC

A few hacks to survive and thrive in the concrete jungle:

  • Embrace Public Transportation - Say goodbye to driving and hello to the subway. It’s the lifeline of the city—fast, efficient, and sometimes a bit funky.
  • Find Your Home Turf - NYC neighborhoods each have their vibe. But don’t worry too much; if you can be near a subway station, you’re just a skip away from wherever the action is.
  • Network, Network, Network - New Yorkers are awesome! Join groups, hit up events—put yourself out there. Connections make this city feel smaller and more like home.
  • Weather Prep - Winters here are serious. Invest in a solid coat, boots, and layers. Summers? Prepare for sticky-hot moments, so light, breezy clothes are your friends.
  • Budget Wisely - NYC isn't cheap. Track your spending, splurge wisely (learn from my early overspending), and keep that cushion handy.
  • Stay Open-Minded - This city’s a melting pot of cultures and ideas. Embrace the diversity, try new things, and soak it all in. Let yourself take risks and give yourself grace.

Living in New York City as a Californian has been wild, wonderful, and oh-so-worth it. The energy here? Infectious. If you’re eyeing a move and don’t mind the spend, dive in! Embrace the chaos, savor the adventures, and let NYC weave its magic. Trust me, it’s a love affair waiting to happen.
